Do you tend to have red cheeks or a red nose?

Do you tend to have red cheeks or a red nose?

Do you feel embarrassed and uncomfortable because of it? Unfortunately, this is quite common for many people in both mild and severe forms, influenced by many factors: food consumed, stress, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, weather, wind, humidity, overheating, drastic changes in temperature, strenuous exercise, alcohol (especially red wine), hot drinks, and spicy foods. The true cause of rosacea is still not fully known, but it is considered the result of a combination of different factors.

As we can see, there are many factors that a person can influence and prevent. Of course, some people's skin is naturally more predisposed to redness. In more severe cases, it is diagnosed as a permanent disease called rosacea. However, its symptoms can be successfully managed. According to experienced professionals, proper skincare and limiting harmful factors can reduce the effects of rosacea to a minimum. Most people lack the patience for long-term treatment. At the first sign of success, they relax, forget about caution, sunbathe too much in the lovely spring sun, and find themselves back where they started, having to begin the treatment anew.

Red cheeks can not only be reddened but also become inflamed, with the vascular network expanding. There can even be tingling, burning sensations, or actual ulcerative pimples. In more severe cases, a reddened and enlarged nose (especially in men), and redness of the eyes, tearing up, or severe eye dryness may be observed.

Understanding the causes

The first step is to identify the cause of the red cheek effect. In up to 40% of cases, it is a genetically inherited disorder that worsens with certain stressors or irritants. This is often due to changes in the innate immune system that respond differently to microorganisms and environmental factors, resulting in persistent inflammation and changes in blood vessels.

Symptoms and progression

The symptoms of red cheeks, red nose, and sometimes red chin vary due to adverse factors. The more a person takes control of the situation, focusing on care and prevention, the better the success in reducing symptoms. Without attention and proper skincare, the symptoms may worsen. Initially, there may be permanent redness (erythema), followed by pimples. Over time, the visible network of blood capillaries on the face may expand (telangiectasia), the skin becomes sensitive, and sensations of burning, itching, and other discomfort may occur. Exacerbations can lead to inflammatory elements and purulent acne (pustules). Over time, facial erythema may become permanent, leading to skin thickening, rough, uneven texture, and more severe symptoms.

Proper care and treatment

If not cared for properly, redness can spread to the nose, forehead, and chin, causing physical and emotional distress, and exacerbating symptoms. For prolonged illness, a doctor should be consulted who may prescribe medication (topical preparations containing metronidazole, azelaic acid, or ivermectin) and laser therapy.

Proper skincare can reduce redness and inflammation and delay the development of symptoms.
