Harmful substances in cosmetic products - how to recognize?

Kaitīgas vielas kosmētikas produktos – kā atpazīt?

Nowadays, people suffering from allergies, contact dermatitis and other diseases are more and more common. Most people don't even realize that it can be caused by the cosmetics they use on a daily basis.

Although there are certain laws for the production of cosmetics, which regulate what the manufacturer can and cannot include in the composition of the product, there are substances that can have undesirable effects on health. Over the years, medical research has resulted in an ever-growing list of substances that adversely affect human health. Many substances are known to be carcinogenic - cancer-causing, and when this risk is detected, they end up on the list of prohibited substances, however, the process is not fast and often de facto is detected. There are other dangerous substances for the immune system, they can develop birth defects, create a risk of various diseases, affect the endocrine system, cause allergic reactions or irritate the skin

All LABRAINS products were created based on the latest research on the effects of substances on health. If there is even the slightest risk that the given substance is endocrine-disrupting or highly irritating, then it is not used, regardless of the fact that it is allowed by law or allowed even in natural cosmetics. LABRAINS does not even use substances widely used in natural cosmetics, which scientists consider to be irritating substances, especially for problematic or very sensitive skin - sodium benzoate, benzoic acid, benzyl alcohol, alcohol... There are effective substances, such as salicylic acid, which work well both against bumps and reduce pores, but its negative effects are increasingly examined scientifically, and the permissible concentrations in the product have been reduced in cosmetics legislation, however, its harmful effect on the body is not sufficiently recognized among various specialists, such as dermatologists.

How to identify harmful substances?

If you were asked what harmful substances you could name, without a doubt you would mention parabens first. Recently, it also serves as one of the marketing weapons, with large letters on the packaging indicating that the product does not contain parabens, thus inviting you to choose this particular product. In fact, it is only to be welcomed that manufacturers of synthetic cosmetics are also thinking about how to improve the composition of their products. Because for a long time, parabens were considered mild preservatives until researchers found them in breast cancer cells. Studies have shown that parabens mimic the action of the hormone estrogen and can cause breast cancer. Likewise, mineral oil (mineral oil) or liquid paraffin (paraffinum liguidum) - cheap oil refining by-product, which is currently considered in several literature sources to be included in the list of carcinogenic substances. In addition, if this substance is not sufficiently purified and is added to cosmetic products, it covers the skin with a non-breathable layer, causing comedones (blackheads, inflammation, liver).

Polyethylene glycols (PEG) are another harmful substance, widely used in cosmetics as surfactants, cleansers, conditioning agents, as well as thickeners, emulsifiers and moisturizers. They are very soluble in water and can dissolve other substances. Therefore, they can be found in many synthetic cosmetic skin cleansers. However, these chemical ingredients can damage the skin's moisture and protective barrier and are therefore not recommended for sensitive, irritated skin. But the biggest concern about the safety of these synthetic ingredients is mainly related to their production process, which produces various harmful byproducts. For example, ethylene oxide and 1,4 - dioxide – a potentially carcinogenic substance. Many other undesirable substances cause similar effects.

LABRAINS has compiled a list of substances to avoid when choosing gentle skin care and washing products for sensitive or problematic skin:

There is no speaker in front of me

Sometimes it is enough to read the name of the substance more carefully out loud to understand what is hidden under it. For example Polyethylene! What do you associate polyethylene with? With plastic bags! Polyvinyl –with vinyl plates, acrylate – with nail polish and paints! If you learn to recognize even a couple of substances, then you will already understand whether this product is suitable or not.

We often hear people say - I've been using this shampoo for three years, and everything was fine, and then suddenly - an allergy! Unfortunately or fortunately, the body has its own resistance threshold: it accumulates, accumulates everything in itself and then at some point it is released, causing allergies and other serious illnesses. The question is, should you put yourself at risk if you can avoid it?

We are already lazy - we go to exercise when we fall, not regularly. Then maybe let this be a step on the way to a healthier life - to evaluate what cosmetics we use. Consider how ready we are to change our habits.
